We give Glory to God

Call to Worship - Psalm 46:1-3, 7

God is our refuge and strength, a very present[b] help in trouble. 2
Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Hymn of Acclamation - How Great is Our God

The splendor of a King, clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice, all the earth rejoice
He wraps Himself in light, and darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice, trembles at His voice

Chorus
How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great, is our God

Age to age He stands, and time is in His hands
Beginning and the End, beginning and the End
The Godhead, Three in One, Father, Spirit, Son
The Lion and the Lamb, Lion and the Lamb - Chorus

Bridge
Name above all names, Worthy of all praise
My heart will sing, how great is our God
Name above all names, Worthy of all praise
My heart will sing, how great is our God - Chorus

We Mourn the Reality of Sin

Hymn of Confession - Lord I Need You

Lord, I come, I confess, Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart, You’re the One that guides my heart

Chorus
Lord, I need You, oh, I need You. Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness, Oh God, how I need You

Where sin runs deep Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
Where You are, Lord, I am free, Holiness is Christ in me - Chorus

So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on You
Jesus, You’re my hope and stay – Chorus

Confession and Assurance of Pardon

Father, we are far more needy than we often admit. We have looked for life in ourselves, trusted in our own strength, and sought comfort in things that cannot save us.

We are prone to wander and often forget how deeply we need Christ. Forgive us for our pride, and for the many ways we resist depending fully on You.

Teach us to trust in You, to hunger for righteousness, and to cling to Jesus alone— our wisdom, our righteousness, our peace, and our salvation.

Renew us by Your Spirit, and lead us to rest not in ourselves,
but in the finished work of Christ.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

We Celebrate Christ as Our Redeemer

Hymn of Redemption - Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Man of Sorrows! what a name, For the Son of God, who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim, Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Bearing shame and scoffing rude, In my place condemned He stood
He sealed my pardon with His blood, Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Guilty, vile, and helpless me; Spotless Lamb of God was He;
Full atonement! can it be? Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Lifted up was He to die; "It is finished!" was His cry;
Now in Heaven exalted high, Hallelujah! What a Savior!

When He comes, our glorious King, All His ransomed home to bring
Then anew this song we'll sing: Hallelujah! What a Savior!

5-Minute Break

In addition to taking children to Ridge Kids and using the restroom, take time to meet/greet one another. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 17:45-47

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into
our hand.”

Sermon: “David and Goliath”
Davis Lacey - 1 Samuel 17 (pgs. 84-94 of The Illuminated Scripture Journal)

Main point: the battle belongs to the LORD – we simply follow.

Genesis 15:18-20: 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”

What led David to step out in faith and fight Goliath, when the rest of Israel was paralyzed by fear and dismay?
-       David knew the PURPOSES of God
-       David knew the PAST FAITHFULNESS of God
-       David knew that the battle was the Lord’s – he was simply called to follow

Where does the thought of following the Lord paralyze you with fear and dismay?
-       Reflect on the PURPOSES of God (i.e. Matt. 24:14, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations…”)
-       Remember the PAST FAITHFULNESS of God (i.e. the gospel)
-       Remember that the battle is the Lord’s – we are simply called to follow Him.

In 2 Samuel 23:1, David is called the “Sweet Psalmist of Israel.”

Questions for Personal Reflection:
-       With what abilities has God gifted you?
-       How do those abilities give you opportunities to A) connect with people, and/or B) serve the needs of other people?
-       What would it look like for you to walk by the Spirit – to use your natural abilities as a platform through which to proclaim the Word of God?

We Respond to the Gospel

Hymn of Response: Jesus Thank You

The mystery of the cross I cannot comprehend,
The agonies of Calvary.
You, the Perfect Holy One, crushed Your Son,
Drank the bitter cup reserved for me.

Chorus
Your blood has washed away my sin, Jesus, thank You.
The Father’s wrath completely satisfied, Jesus, thank You.
Once Your enemy, now seated at Your table, Jesus, thank You.

By Your perfect sacrifice I’ve been brought near,
Your enemy you’ve made Your friend.
Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace,
Your mercy and your kindness know no end. - Chorus

Lover of my soul – I want to live for you (REPEAT) - Chorus

Hymn of New Creation: In Christ Alone”

In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain;
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
For I am His and He is mine—
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death—
This is the pow’r of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home—
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

Benediction & Sending

Having been reminded of the future grace which is ours in Jesus Christ the Lord, may you now be refreshed by the grace which is yours already:
  • You are loved by God the Father - there is no one left to please.
  • You are saved by God the Son - there is nothing left to prove.
  • You are comforted by God the Spirit - there is nothing left to fear.
Autumn Ridge Family - you are sent into the world to make disciples of all nations. Go, therefore: in the love of God the Father, in the resurrection of God the Son, and in the comfort of God the Spirit; now and forevermore. Amen.
