The King’s Overture

Pastor Davis preached from 2 Samuel 5–6, showing how David’s reign serves as an “overture” pointing toward a greater King. The central message was that Jesus fulfills what David foreshadows. David imperfectly shepherded and united God’s people, defeated their enemies, restored God’s presence to Jerusalem, and extended God’s blessing. Jesus accomplishes each of these things fully: He is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His people, the Savior who ransoms every tribe and nation, the mediator who brings sinful people into God’s presence, and the King who generously blesses His church. David’s failures also remind us that no human leader can be our ultimate hope. Because God is faithful to His promises, we can trust His Word even when obedience seems difficult. The sermon concluded with three responses: savor Christ, trust the Scriptures, and confidently share the goodness of Jesus with others.
