Can Jesus and the Old Testament Get Along?

Bible Text: Matthew 5:17-20 | Preacher: Davis Lacey | Series: The Gospel of Matthew: The King and His Kingdom | What is the Purpose of the Old Testament?

John Calvin summarizes the purposes of the Old Testament in Institutes of the Christian Religion

To show the nature of God, the nature of Man, and the need for salvation
To protect society as a whole from unrestrained evil
To guide God’s people in conduct that is pleasing/honoring to God

What does it Mean for Jesus to Fulfill/Accomplish the Old Testament?

In his perfect life, his death, and his resurrection, Jesus shows once and for all the holiness of God, the sinful state of Man, and the means to salvation (the gospel).
The person and work of Jesus is the basis for God’s common grace to the whole world (1 Timothy 4:10). Evil doesn’t go unchecked.
Jesus teaches and models what it looks like for Christians to grow in godliness.

How do Christians Follow an Old Testament that has Already Been Fulfilled?

Don’t throw out the Law/Old Testament
Use the most up-to-date version of the Law/Old Testament
Seek the “better righteousness” as you follow the Law/Old Testament
