We Give Glory to God

Call to Worship: “Romans 11:33-36”

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! 34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” 35 “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Hymn of Acclamation: “Romans 11 Doxology”
Peterson, 2006

VERSE
Oh the depth of the riches
Of the wisdom and knowledge of God
How unsearchable his judgment
How unknowable his paths

Who knows the mind of our God
And who can bring counsel to Him?
Who has given to God
That God should repay?

CHORUS
For from Him, through Him
To Him, is everything.
To God be the glory forever and ever
To God be the glory forever, amen.

REPEAT VERSE

REPEAT CHORUS

For from Him, through Him
To Him, is everything.
From Him, through Him
To Him, is everything.

To God be the glory forever and ever.
To God be the glory forever, amen.
To God be the glory forever and ever.
To God be the glory forever, amen.

We Mourn The Reality of sin

Hymn of Confession: “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”
Robinson, 1758

Come, thou fount of every blessing;
tune my heart to sing thy grace.
Streams of mercy, never-ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it.
Mount of thy redeeming love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I’ve come.
And I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God.
He to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.

O, to grace, how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it!
Prone to leave the God I love!
Here’s my heart, Lord: Take and seal it.
Seal it for thy courts above.

Prayer of Confession
Adapted from John calvin’s Geneva liturgy of 1543

Lord God, Eternal and Almighty Father: We acknowledge before your holy majesty that we are poor sinners, conceived and born in guilt and in corruption.

We are prone to do evil, unable of our own power to do good. Because of our sin, we endlessly violate your holy commandments.

O Lord, with heartfelt sorrow we repent and turn away from all our offenses. We condemn our evil ways, with true sorrow asking that your grace will relieve our distress.

Have compassion on us, most gracious God, Father of mercies, for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. And in removing our guilt, also grant us daily increase of the grace of your Holy Spirit.

Produce in us the fruits of holiness and of righteousness pleasing in your sight: Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

[Pause for a moment of Silent Confession]

We Celebrate Christ as Our Redeemer

Assurance of Pardon: “Ephesians 1:7-10”

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insightmaking known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

Hymn of Redemption: “In Christ Alone”
Getty and Townend, 2002

In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain;
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
For I am His and He is mine—
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death—
This is the pow’r of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home—
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

Reading: “Matthew 12:38-42”

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.42 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

We Respond to the Gospel

Hymn of Response: “Jesus, Thank You”
Sczebel, 2003

The mystery of the cross I cannot comprehend,
The agonies of Calvary.
You, the Perfect Holy One, crushed Your Son,
Drank the bitter cup reserved for me.

CHORUS

Your blood has washed away my sin,
Jesus, thank You.
The Father’s wrath completely satisfied,
Jesus, thank You.
Once Your enemy, now seated at Your table,
Jesus, thank You.

By Your perfect sacrifice I’ve been brought near,
Your enemy you’ve made Your friend.
Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace,
Your mercy and your kindness know no end.

REPEAT CHORUS

Lover of my soul – I want to live for you (REPEAT)

Hymn of New creation: “Turn Your Eyes”
Lemmel, Sovereign grace music – 1922, 2019

Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace

Turn your eyes to the hillside
Where justice and mercy embraced
There the Son of God gave His life for us
And our measureless debt was erased

[Chorus]
Jesus, to You we lift our eyes
Jesus, our glory and our prize
We adore You, behold You, our Savior ever true
Oh Jesus, we turn our eyes to You

Turn your eyes to the morning
And see Christ the Lion awake
What a glorious dawn, fear of death is gone
For we carry His life in our veins

[Chorus]

Turn your eyes to the heavens
Our King will return for His own
Every knee will bow, every tongue will shout,
‘All glory to Jesus alone!’

[Chorus]
