We Give Glory to God

Call to Worship: “Joel 2:25-27”

25 I will restore to you the years
that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,
my great army, which I sent among you.

26 “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
and praise the name of the Lord your God,
who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.
27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
and that I am the Lord your God and there is none else.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.

Hymn of Acclamation: “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
Neander, 1680

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
The King of creation
O my soul, praise Him
For He is thy health and salvation
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near
Praise Him in glad adoration

Praise to the Lord
Who o’er all things so wonderfully reigneth
Shelters thee under His wings, and so gladly sustaineth
Hast thou not seen how thy desires have been
Granted in what He ordaineth

Hallelujah (4x)

Praise to the Lord
Who doth prosper thy work and defend thee
Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do
If with His love He befriend thee

Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in me adore Him
All that hath life and breath
Come now with praises before Him
Let the ‘amen’ sound from His people again
Gladly for aye we adore Him

Hallelujah (4x)

We Mourn The Reality of sin

Hymn of Confession: “Hallelujah! What a Savior!”
Bliss, 1876

Man of Sorrows! what a name
For the Son of God, who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
In my place condemned He stood
He sealed my pardon with His blood
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!

Guilty, vile, and helpless me;
Spotless Lamb of God was He;
Full atonement! can it be?
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Lifted up was He to die;
“It is finished!” was His cry;
Now in Heaven exalted high
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!

When He comes, our glorious King,
All His ransomed home to bring,
Then anew this song we’ll sing:
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Corporate confession
Adapted from the Worship sourcebook

Lord God,
we praise you for sending Jesus the light into this world.
We confess that we live as though the light had never defeated darkness.
We confess that we ignore the Savior you sent to be among us and to live in us, and do not yearn for his coming each moment in our waiting hearts.

Forgive us for not opening our eyes to Jesus.
Prepare us for His return.

Help us rejoice in the light, so that your grace can illuminate
the darkened places of our hearts.  Amen.

[PAUSE FOR SILENT RFLECTION]

We Celebrate Christ as Our Redeemer

Assurance of Pardon: 1 Peter 2:9-10

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Hymn of Redemption: “Jesus!”
Eichelberger and Bolen, 2013

The King of all Creation set aside His crown
A servant to the Father’s love
Descended from his throne above

Author of Salvation, Giver of new life
Crucified to pay for sin
Our righteousness is in the name of

Jesus! Every heart and tongue confess
Your name above all names
All things of this earth belong to you
Forever you will reign

God of Resurrection, Conqueror of death
Ruler over everything
The Lord of lords and King of kings is

Jesus! Every heart and tongue confess
Your name above all names
All things of this earth belong to you
Forever you will reign

Highly exalted is the name, of Jesus Christ
Heaven and earth declare all praise, to Jesus Christ
Highly exalted is the name, of Jesus Christ
Heaven and earth declare all praise to

Jesus! Every heart and tongue confess
Your name above all names
All things of this earth belong to you
Forever you will reign

Jesus! Every heart and tongue confess
Your name above all names
All things of this earth belong to you
Forever you will reign

Highly exalted is the name, of Jesus Christ
Heaven and earth declare all praise, to Jesus Christ

Reading: “Matthew 12:22-37”

22 Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” 25 Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. 26 And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or how can someone enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. 30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.31 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Prayer for the Proclamation of God’s Word

Sermon: “The Unforgivable Sin”
Davis Lacey – Matthew 12:22-37

The Unforgivable Sin:

  • What is it? (vv. 22-32)
  • Why is it unforgivable? (vv. 33-37)
  • How does this passage offer us good news?

Hymn of Response: “All I Have is Christ”
Kauflin, 2008

[Chorus]
Hallelujah! All I have is Christ!
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life!

I once was lost in darkest night
Yet thought I knew the way
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave
I had no hope that You would own
A rebel to your will
And if you had not loved me first
I would refuse You still

But as I ran my hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state
And led me to the cross
And I beheld God’s love displayed
You suffered in my place
You bore the wrath reserved for me
Now all I know is grace

[Chorus]

Now, Lord, I would be yours alone
And live so all might see
The strength to follow your commands
Could never come from me
O Father, use my ransomed life
In any way you choose
And let my song forever be, my only boast is you!

Commissioning of the Church

Hymn of the New Creation: “The Church’s One Foundation”
Stone, 1866

The church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord,
She is His new creation
By water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her
To be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her,
And for her life He died.

Elect from every nation,
Yet one over all the earth;
Her charter of salvation:
One Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy Name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,
To one hope she presses,
With every grace endued.

The church shall never perish,
Her dear Lord to defend
To guide, sustain and cherish,
Is with her to the end
Though there be those that hate her,
And false sons in her pale
Against a foe or traitor,
She ever shall prevail

Mid toil and tribulation, And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation, Of peace forevermore;

‘Til, with the vision glorious,
Her longing eyes are blessed,
And the great church victorious
Shall be the church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won.
O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we
Like them, the meek and lowly,
On high may dwell with Thee.

Benediction and Sending
