Order of Worship – June 28, 2020

Preliminaries: Welcome and Announcements

Ridge Kids – see today’s Order of Worship online at (www.AutumnRidgeCommunityChurch.com) to access a Bible Lesson, and Coloring Sheet!

Activity 1: Birth Order

Help kids determine their age based on the day, month and year of their birth. Instruct them to line up from oldest to youngest, then help them to state their exact age one at a time. (Ex: 7 years, 3 months and 23 days, if they can)

SAY- You can tell many things about a person just by knowing when he or she was born. For example, your great-grandparents probably grew up with a favorite radio program. Most of your parents had a favorite television show instead. Today, you watch shows on tablets and smartphones! We will be learning a little about Jesus and the people in His family who were born before him.

Activity 2: Family List

In one minute, help your child make a list of as many people in their family as they can.

SAY- We usually don’t know all the people in our family. Chances are you have distant cousins or great-great-great aunts whom you have never met. But we all have families, no matter how many members of our family we know. Jesus had a family too! Today we will learn a little about Jesus’ family and talk about the way we can join His family.

We Give Glory to God

Call to Worship: “Exodus 34:5-8”

The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.

Hymn of Acclamation: “The Blessing”
Elevation, Carnes, Jobe – 2020

The Lord bless you
And keep you
Make His face shine upon you
And be gracious to you
The Lord turn His
Face toward you
And give you peace 2X

Amen, amen, amen
Amen, amen, amen

The Lord bless you
And keep you
Make His face shine upon you
And be gracious to you
The Lord turn His
Face toward you
And give you peace

Amen, amen, amen
Amen, amen, amen

May His favor be upon you
And a thousand generations
Your family and your children
And their children, and their children 2x

May His presence go before you
And behind you, and beside you
All around you, and within you
He is with you, He is with you

In the morning, in the evening
In your coming, and your going
In your weeping, and rejoicing

He is for you, He is for you
He is for you, He is for you

Amen, amen, amen
Amen, amen, amen

We Mourn the Reality of Sin

Hymn of Confession: “Rock of Ages, Cleft For Me”
Toplady, 1776

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save from wrath and make me pure

Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die (Repeat Line 3x)

While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyes shall close in death,
When I rise to worlds unknown,
And behold Thee on Thy throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee (Repeat Line 3x)

We Celebrate Christ As Our Redeemer

Assurance of Pardon: “ Truth’s from Romans 8:34; 2 Corinthians 5:17”

Hear the good news!
Christ died for us,
Christ rose for us,
Christ reigns in power for us,
Christ prays for us.
Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.
The old life has gone; a new life has begun.

Believe the good news of the gospel:
In Jesus Christ you are forgiven.

Thanks be to God!

Hymn of Redemption: “In Christ Alone”
Getty and Townend, 2002

In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain;
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
For I am His and He is mine—
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death—
This is the pow’r of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home—
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

Reading: “Matthew 5:21-26”

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

Prayer for the Proclamation of God’s Word

Main Point: We Cannot be Apathetic about Anger. We must Humbly Destroy it, or it will Destroy Us.

  1. WHY God does not want His children to be apathetic about anger (vv. 21-22)
  2. HOW we can humbly destroy anger (vv. 23-26)
    1. The GOAL (of the Christian Life)
    2. HUMILITY
    3. BABY STEPS
    4. DECISIVE ACTION

We Respond to the Gospel

Hymn of Response: “Before the Throne of God Above”
Bancroft, 1863

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav’n He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me

Behold Him there, the risen Lamb
My perfect, spotless Righteousness
The great unchangeable I AM
The King of glory and of grace
One with Himself, I cannot die
My soul is purchased by His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Savior and my God

Hymn of New Creation: “Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery” Boswell, Bleecker and Papa , 2013

Come behold the wondrous mystery
In the dawning of the King
He the theme of heaven’s praises
Robed in frail humanity
In our longing, in our darkness
Now the light of life has come
Look to Christ, who condescended
Took on flesh to ransom us

Come behold the wondrous mystery
He the perfect Son of Man
In His living, in His suffering
Never trace nor stain of sin
See the true and better Adam
Come to save the hell-bound man
Christ the great and sure fulfillment
Of the law; in Him we stand

Come behold the wondrous mystery
Christ the Lord upon the tree
In the stead of ruined sinners
Hangs the Lamb in victory
See the price of our redemption
See the Father’s plan unfold
Bringing many sons to glory
Grace unmeasured, love untold

Come behold the wondrous mystery
Slain by death the God of life
But no grave could e’er restrain Him
Praise the Lord; He is alive!
What a foretaste of deliverance
How unwavering our hope
Christ in power resurrected
As we will be when he comes
